4R44E/5R55E Engine Stall After Overhaul

5R55W Broken Snap Ring

Several 5R55W transmissions have been arriving at transmission shops with the Forward Clutch Hub to Ring Gear retaining Snap Ring broken (figure 1).

There are two options to repair this problem without using a retainer ring from another used 5R55W transmissions. A snap ring from a TF6 (figure 2) or a 4l60E Forward Clutch hub (figure 30) will work as a replacement.

The 4L60E Forward Hub retainer ring will have to be modified by shortening the length at one end to fit the 5R55W Hub (figure 4). The Snap ring from the TF6 Hub will work as a direct fit and is much stronger than both the original or 4L60E retainers (figure 5).

I would like to thank Wayne Deveau from Transmissions of West Palm Beach Florida for the information and parts to make this article possible.

5R110W Delay and/or No Reverse Engagement

A late model Ford truck with a 5R110W and over 100,000 miles on it with a complaint of a delay and sometimes no apply in reverse.

After thorough check of the linkage and shifter assembly the transmission is removed for further inspection. When disassembled on the bench, there is nothing to indicate a reason for the symptoms that occurred. First thought was a possible glitch with the Internal Range Sensor (figure 2).

After some closer inspection a not to easily seen failure is present with the Internal Range Sensor rooster comb pin. With the rooster comb pushed away from the sensor. A clearer view reveals that the pin that follows the worm track in the rooster comb (figure 2a) is worn paper thin. When placed new sensor assembly (left) is placed side by with a new range sensor it is easily noticeable (figure 3).

The other item that was noticeable on the new sensor was the return spring for the sensor pin cam. The newer sensor had a different spring configuration that placed more tension on the pin to rooster comb contact (figure 4).

Special thanks to the guys over at Al’s Transmissions in Sunrise Florida for the heads up on this problem.
